Green Goblet were determined to ensure that the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in England and Wales this summer was the greenest ever. As an official licensee of the tournament, Green Goblet provided branded reusable cups to all host venues of the tournament.
Having worked with many county cricket grounds for a number of seasons, Green Goblet were bowled over when they were selected to provide reusable cups for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 (CWC19). The tournament is being held across 11 venues – warm up fixtures began on May 24 and the final will be held at Lords on July 14.
Green Goblet provided a sustainable solution for drinks at every venue at CWC19 for the first time in the event’s history. This opportunity allowed Green Goblet to spread its message of “Refill Not Landfil”’ to an international audience of sport and cricket fans.
Encouraged by Sky Ocean Rescue’s #PassOnPlastic campaign since 2017, the majority of cricket grounds across England and Wales have used reusable cups before. In fact, Green Goblet already supply eight out of the 11 tournament venues.
Green Goblet were asked to produce CWC19 branded reusable cups for all venues throughout the whole tournament, a feat that had never been attempted before in a sporting world cup event. The logistical challenge of delivering and collecting cups from the 11 venues from Durham to Southampton was a test, but proved to be a great success. It’s estimated that over the course of the tournament, the company will have prevented more than 2.5 million single-use plastic cups from going to landfill!
The reusable pint and half pint cups have a series of different designs, each showing the CWC19 logo, which fans had a choice to collect as a souvenir. The reusable cups were available for a £1 deposit with the first drink for each spectator. Every subsequent drink was then poured into a clean, reusable cup.
When the supporter had finished drinking, they could either take their reusable cup home as a souvenir or return it to a cup refund point in exchange for their £1 deposit. After each match, Green Goblet professionally washed and dried each cup in washer/dryer machines that are capable of washing 265,000 cups in a 24-hour period, before delivering them to another fixture to be reused.
