The National Memorial Arboretum, in Staffordshire, has been granted planning permission for a new events building featuring flexible event spaces and meeting rooms. This new building will be able to accommodate a wide range of events, and replaces a large marquee that was erected temporarily several years ago.

The Arboretum currently hosts small and medium sized events for organisations from across the UK, including military, fraternity and business groups. As part of The Royal British Legion it also stages large set piece events on key dates each year. Revenues generated from commercial events help secure the sustainability of the site, ensuring it remains free to enter for its 300,000 annual visitors.

The events space will enable conferences to take place at the Arboretum, providing modern amenities expected by delegates and catering facilities capable of accommodating banquets of up to 300 people. A new bar area will provide a dedicated informal space for drinks receptions, registrations, break-out sessions and evening functions.

The new facility will feature a large suite, divisible by three, which provides six possible configurations and spectacular views across the Arboretum site. A further four smaller meeting rooms open up to provide a second, smaller suite. Accommodating theatre style events of up to 500 and small intimate meetings at the other end of the spectrum, the new event space will be an ideal venue for companies and MICE agents seeking a location with a difference.

Glen Howells Architects have designed the building to make extensive use of glazing, featuring a rear terrace to allow guests to admire the Arboretum’s landscape during events. The design concept also features light-coloured timber cladding and a crisp steel frame. Stepnell has recently been appointed as the main building contractor, with construction of the new events pavilion commencing shortly for completion in autumn 2018.

Sarah Oakden, head of marketing at the National Memorial Arboretum, commented: “We are determined to continue to broaden the event services that we can offer to visiting groups and businesses. The new building has been designed with the needs of event planners and conference organisers at the forefront of our minds, ensuring that we can meet all of their requirements. This new flexible building, with extensive new facilities, will provide a modern event space for meetings, conferences, drinks receptions, and evening functions. Put simply, it’s for events that matter in a place that matters”
